This is our first blog entry and I am going to address single travelers. Eric and I travel together but that doesn't mean that we can't relate to the people that are traveling by themselves!
Traveling alone at least once in your life is a huge recommendation from me personally. :)
Have fun on your travels and good luck!
1.) Make sure you have EVERYTHING you may need for yourself!
These are things that you will be SO much happier that you brought and/or didn't forget!:
- Passport/ID
- Cash
- Toothbrush/toothpaste
- Deodorant
- Hair ties (if you have long locks)
- Keep the makeup to a minimum, it's just more space
- Travel credit card if you are using one
- Feminine products
- Adapter cords/phone chargers
- Razor (optional)
AND, if you are CAMPING:
- Tent
- Blankets
- Pillows (we seem to always forget this one)
- Flashlight
- Food suitable for your trip
- Keep stocked up on water
- Dishes to boil water/soup and to cook over the fire
- Hot dogs are easy to cook over a fire, although you'd need a cooler
- A book
- Raincoat
- Clothing appropriate for your trip
- Swim suit if you will be swimming
- Hammock (if you have one, do it. It's awesome)
- Camera to capture everything you are seeing (optional)
2.) Keep a Travel Journal!
People often love to keep a travel journal. I know I do! Record everything you see and experience and take your time on it. Make it something you will enjoy to read later. Making memories while traveling is why we all do it. So, why not remember how amazing it was?
3.) Trust yourself
This one is pretty important, especially if you're a woman. It's always great to meet people and talk but always trust your gut feeling and be smart. If you're alone, it can be dangerous and it's important to pay attention to your surroundings. Bring pepper spray or a tazer if it would make you feel safer. Don't be like the girls in the movie, Taken who tell the man they are all alone in their temporary apartment then they get kidnapped. That would NOT be fun!
4.) Meet Friends, make memories
This is something many solo travelers make a point of doing. They tend to want to experience life in other places and communicate with locals or other travelers. While traveling by yourself, you may very well stay in Hostels especially if you are going to be out of country. Most of the time if you are staying in a Hostel, there will be others there who are likeminded individuals. Talk to them. Ask them who they are and where they're from. Write about them in your travel journal or add them on Facebook. Making connections is one of the best feelings as a human being, so don't be afraid!
However, if you are not staying in a Hostel, I would personally recommend going to a local area where you can meet people who you would more than likely get along with (hiking trails, parks, local bars).
5.) Stop and appreciate what you see and experience
When you've completed that hike or are floating in a shark cage or falling from an airplane, stop and appreciate it. Appreciate that killer view at the top, the mountains, the oceans or lakes. Appreciate that giant shark and know that it is very powerful and have respect for it. And appreciate the fall back towards the ground while looking out at all of the land/water you see.
Life has become so fast, so in these special moments, slow it down. Truly experience these moments and be present. That's one of the best tips anyone can give you.
